Twitter to Add Geo-Tagging

23 August 2009

Twitter is bringing easy geo-tagging to its popular micro-blogging service which might give possible ways for them to make money.

Twitter Co-founder Biz Stone wrote on their blog:

We’re gearing up to launch a new feature which makes Twitter truly location-aware. A new API will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet. Folks will need to activate this new feature by choice because it will be off by default and the exact location data won’t be stored for an extended period of time. However, if people do opt-in to sharing location on a tweet-by-tweet basis, compelling context will be added to each burst of information.

Third party developers like Germany’s Twibble have already produced geo-location services for Twitter relying on user details in their profiles. Let’s see what Twitter will have to offer on their own.

The benefits of geo-tagging are clear in relation to pictures for Google Earth and similar applications. It will be interesting to see how useful it is in relation to twitter.

I can think of one thing that makes this very useful. Event broadcasting. Imagine you broadcast a certain event on Twitter, of course you need to tell your followers on where your event is. This is where Geo Tagging takes place.
