No More Love for KeywordLuv

It was somewhere in 2008 when I installed the keywordluv plugin in this blog thinking of attracting more visitors and to create healthier discussions.

Sad to say, I am removing it as I am getting tons of spam/unrelated comments. Thanks to Steve Cronin for creating such a wonderful plugin, I know it wasn’t intended to be used by spammers but to help build traffic to blogs, sad thing is – some guys are using it unwisely.

So what went wrong with KeywordLuv? I was thinking of using it but might reconsider…

    • admin says:

nothing Matt, it’s just that I’m receiving tons of unrelated comments being delivered thru the keywordluv query by many people :-) I like the plugin really but
checking tons of comments and ending up putting 95% of them in trash is tiring :-)

Well every thing has two sides one is the positive aspect and the other is negative. You should just try to cope up with all these difficulties. In your case which is spam. You can apply akismet to fight spam.

  3. Brent from Contemporary oil painting says:

Well I am a huge proponent of DoFollow blogs and believe that encouraging commenters by rewarding them with a DoFollow backlink (especially when combined with CommentLuv) encourages people to come and leave comments on your blog. But I guess you are right and few people are not worthy for it.

  4. admin says:

@Brent: this blog still is dofollow as a reward for my commenters :-)
@Martin: I have akismet installed the first day I had this blog..

Even I am finding problems to cope with this keywordluv now. The problem that I am finding is that KeywordLuv is heavily abused by marketing and advertising folks looking to make a quick back link and after seeing dozens of “Mark@Oceanside Divorce Lawyers” or “Bill@Cheap Auto Parts” commenters I realize that the system is being abused. Especially when the landing page is nothing more than an advertising site or a flat website selling products. I have already run across other major blogs that have “Enter your username only, any keywords after your username will be removed or comment deleted” and I am starting to think this may not be a bad idea.

Yes, even i am having problems with keywordluv plugin. As a blog become popular more and more spammers come in and start abusing this feature by providing comments that do not contribute to conversation.Current state of Spam Defending plugins is not 100% proof. I’ve completely removed Keywordluv from my blog.

  7. Unfortunately, this is often the case when the spammers hit the net, they really sure do know how to mess up a good thing, really agrivating for us whitehat marketers, but regardless this is why we diversify. Sorry, it didn’t work out so well.

  8. Scott from Birmingham Storage says:

I think that Zaldy Dalisay may be a victim of a piece of software called Comment Kahuna. You get a lot of spammers using it because you can post the same generic message to a bunch of blogs to build backlinks.

I wouldn’t blame you for ditching keywordluv and/or commentluv. They’re a good idea in theory, but there’s too many mass spammers out there who’ll just abuse any linking opportunity they find.

    • admin says:

Yes, I really love the plugin but I don’t want to waste a lot of time going thru nonsense comments…

      • Flip Flops says:

I’m not sure it will ever be possible to get rid of spammers in the same way we’ll never get rid of junk mail, cold callers or any of the other annoying in your face advertising. So long as google sets the rules they do its going to be part of the cycle.

I use Discus myself but then I have a low comment turnover and I notice you have a lot so you’re clearly doing something right using your current system. It’s something I weigh up switching over to but am not sure if I want to deal/have time to deal with the amount of spam you say you receive. Have you tried anything like discus for a while? Or Facebooks commenting app which I’ve heard they’ve now made readable to google?

I think I’ll need to switch at some point so any feedback on that would be great.

        Cheers
        Josh

  9. Really happy to have fouind this post, I am considering putting keywordluv on my blog, but having heard of the spam comments , I was’nt sure if I will now
Hope you dont mind if Iask you a question.
In your opinion does the gain from having it over rule the nuisance value of the spammers, in my case with only a brand new blog. Would appreciate your thoughts on this, also if all the blogs become no follow, wont we be just surrendering to the spammers. Its a pity that so few can destroy some thing that is good for all

I’m a newcomer to blogging so the different platforms and optional plugins take some getting used to (and just as u get used to some tool or other, u find that things haver moved on!). Are there not methods of dealing with spam comments without turning the plugins off and possibly losing good comments?

  11. I have been using KWL for some time now and if you can get a decent spam filter on it then gradually it should filter it out, dont get me wrong you will always get the odd spam comment but it eliminates most of them. Try it for a while with a good spam filter and see how you get on that is the best advice I can give.

Do not write KWL off as it is a great and very usefull plug-in.

Good to know I am not the only one having this problem. I just installed my Keyword Luv plugin this afternoon, because the comments were getting a little too “dirty” for the rest of my readers, and for me.

Its unfortunate because I enjoyed helping out other webmasters, but some people just don’t play fair.

  13. Bob from Locksmith Watford says:

I think Keywordluv is a great plugin if you can be botherd to moderate your comments or use a spamfilter because if you don’t then, yea you will get alot of spamming comments which is very annoying!

  14. Keywordluv is ok, it does tend to attract spammer bots, this drives me mad on my sites but I have now started using a decent CAPTCHA code that seems to work very well.

@Bob try using a decent CAPTCHA code mate this will stop these bloody spammers!!!!
