2008 Trend: Using Google Instead Of The Address Bar

15 December 2008

I came to the December 2 announcement published by the Google Press Center earlier and found a list of the top 10 fast-rising search terms of 2008 in the U.S. and another list showing the top 10 keyword searches globally.

In The U.S.

  1. obama
  2. facebook
  3. att
  4. iphone
  5. youtube
  6. fox news
  7. palin
  8. beijing 2008
  9. david cook
  10. surf the channel

Globally

  1. sarah palin
  2. beijing 2008
  3. facebook login
  4. tuenti
  5. heath ledger
  6. obama
  7. nasza klasa
  8. wer kennt wen
  9. euro 2008
  10. jonas brothers

Did you noticed the ones I have highlighted in red especially the last one? I wonder why people would type keywords that is the website name itself or something similar like “facebook login” in Google search form instead of just typing facebook.com in the address bar of their browser. Are people just getting lazy nowadays that they find typing a site’s name in Google much easier to go to a site?

Even when I narrowed down the list, going to popular searches in the Philippines, I found y8.com and friendster.com in the top 10. I find it really dumb looking for the friendster website by typing friendster.com in a Google search. Is it a new trend? Or internet users are really getting huge worldwide that even persons that don’t know what an address bar for is now surfing it.

I would guess it is probably just the people who are not too familiar web browsing and do not realize you can just type the site into the address bar. Or it could just be that people are getting lazier by the day. Both would make sense to me.

Maybe they want to muddy the waters for those who are into keyword research or the hot search terms? I think I’m one of those people anyway. So sue me. nyahaha.

I think people are just lazy and this seems like less work for them, when in reality it is probably easier just to type it in to the address bar.
